Milnerton (named after Lord Milner, Governor of the Cape Colony) was originally a small village that was built in 1897 and links Cape Town to the rest of the West Coast. During August and September, the West Coast and its surrounding areas are transformed into a magical wonderland bursting with colour when the semi-desert flowers start to bloom.

Enjoy a walk on the beach during the evening as the sun sets across the ocean, or take a stroll along the Lagoon while you enjoy the view of Table Mountain. Milnerton’s beach is kept spotless and local council members make sure cleaners do a daily patrol on the beach to remove any waste. There are also rubbish bins located within close proximity so that the beach and its surrounding areas remain relatively clean.

The beach in Milnerton is rather exposed and locals say it always offers dependable surfing conditions throughout the year. Winter is the ideal time for surfing here, when the wind direction blows from the east towards the southeast.

The best time of year to visit will depend on your personal interests and your budget. The majority of the hotels and lodges charge high rates in the peak summer holiday season between December and January, but after that they start to decrease their rates radically from May to September, so if you are looking for the most bang for your buck, this is the best time to come. There are also lots of things to see at this time of year when the whale watching season starts and the dessert flowers are in full bloom. The only concern is the rainy weather and even though the Cape does have many warm sunny days, most of the region’s rain fall occurs during the winter months. If you want to relax on the beach and play in the ocean the summer time between October and November is the best time to holiday in Milnerton.
